Mackinac Island Fudge

The luscious chocolate confections that have delighted candy lovers for many years might never have made its appearance had it not been for a fortuitous "accident". In 1887, a candymaker went to work for the Grand Hotel, an elegant establishment on Mackinac Island, Michigan.


One day, during the preparation of a chocolate fondue mixture, a mistake occurred and the recipe "set up" or formed into a creamy smooth concoction on the marble slab. The candymaker continued to refine the marble slab technique until he perfected what we now enjoy as "fudge".

Today, the tradition of quality, and freshness is carried on with the same dedication. The American Fudge Factory is justifiably proud of its chocolates, candies and fudge. That pride is the cornerstone of The American Fudge Factory success story.

On 1 April 1996 - April Fool's Day - the first American Fudge Factory store was opened at Randburg Waterfront, Johannesburg.


The response from the public was overwhelming from the start and has remained so ever since.


What's so great at The American Fudge Factory?

First and foremost, the Product !

Each and every gram of mouth-
watering fudge is handmade from scratch in giant copper kettles, then creamed and cooled on marble slabs. Using a recipe handed down for generations, Mackinac Island Fudge consists of only the finest ingredients - no preservatives.

We also offer other tasty delights such as; turtles, almond bark and assorted white chocolate, semi-sweet and milk chocolate confections.


Very important, the Entertainment !

All our fudges and candies are mixed, cooked, poured, creamed, shaped and then cut into slices in full view of passers-by. The entertainment value inherent in this process can be likened to that of watching a glass blower practice his craft, and similarly never fails to attract people to the store.


Once they have approached the store, they can smell the delicious aroma emanating from the store.

The American Fudge Factory strives to provide its customers with "Whatever it takes Service". It is our stated objective to continuously surprise our customers to the extent that they are compelled to comment on the excellent levels of service evident in all our stores.


This is achieved by employing friendly and knowledgeable staff, who personally greet each customer and offer them a free taste sample and very often tell them the story of the fudge.
